  1. Three people I am considering for references/recommendations are Dr. Ahmida from the Political Science department, Professor Miller from the Writing department, and Sally Mills, Esq. from the law office where I interned. I have already spoken with Dr. Ahmida, and he has offered to be a reference. I also have a strong list of 5-6 others that I can implement in different scenarios, and a few on that list have already agreed as well.
I hope these individuals will say I am hard-working and bring the best version of myself to every class. I would also hope they say that I am driven to succeed not just because of grades but because I really am passionate about the majors and minors I am working in – they are truly meaningful to me (I think most of them know, but my majors are English and Political Science and my minors are Writing and Health, Law & Policy). I think they would describe my character as trustworthy, professional, friendly, and confident – I am self-motivated, but I take advantage of every opportunity my professors or other faculty members are willing to offer to me.
I would like them to know a few of my future goals and what led me to pursue them: I hope to attend law school upon graduation from UNE and pursue a career in the legal field (or writing!) but more toward the advocacy and outreach side where I feel my writing skills can be most utilized for good. During my last two years of high school, while Covid forced a bit of a reality check with most everyone, I became incredibly interested in the law, particularly how it pertains to social issues such as gender equality and racial justice. Everyone has told me that I have plenty of time to figure out what I want to do and change my mind, and that is very comforting and helpful, but so far, my passion for this type of work and academic study hasn’t waivered! Some helpful items I think my references should know are that I am a paid writing tutor on campus, have applied for a summer internship at the Maine ACLU, and have applied for this year’s Alumni Scholarship.

  2. I would choose my boss from the ice cream place(Little Z’s), my boss from the arena I film at (The Tsongas Center) and my boss from the pottery store I worked at (Plaster fun time). I would choose these people because I feel I had a very good work relationship with them and feel that I represented myself accurately while working for them. I think that all three of them would say that I am a quick learner and that I am dedicated, reliable and a good team player. I worked for all three jobs at the same time and would always take extra shifts and let the workplace know ahead of time what my schedule was for the multiple jobs. I was always early for my shifts and did tasks that were not included in the job description to go above and beyond and help my coworkers out. If I were to use these people as my references I would reach out to them, ask them if they were okay to be my reference and then catch up on some things that I have been doing recently so that they could be ready to speak on my behalf if needed.

  3. One person I could think of who would be willing to be a reference is a manager I had over the summer named Reina and an old education teacher of mine named Cindy. Unfortunately, I can’t think of a third one, mostly because in trying to get into the working world I completely blanked that you need references. For a lot of the people who would have been good references it’s been a long time since we’ve talked and it was so long ago that I don’t think I was then is close enough to the person I am now. I think if I asked the two people I’ve come up with now, they’d be able to vouch that I have a good work ethic. In both cases I worked in an environment that I wanted to do more in. The only thing I can think of that they wouldn’t already know is how dedicated I am to trauma informed teaching.

  4. For references, I have a list of several that I could pick from depending on the situation, but for the purpose of this assignment I have narrowed that list down to three. I have already spoken to most of these people about being a reference, and all of those who I asked have agreed. Out of the three, one is my high school advisor, who has seen my creative side, dedication to my learning, and is very familiar with my personality. Another would be a coworker of mine from the UNE EMS club who has worked with me when responding to emergency calls, has seen how I act under pressure, and can attest to my teamwork skills. Lastly, I would ask the mother of the medically complex twin babies I provide care for, who is familiar with my active-listening skills, compassion, and personable nature. These people would likely speak to how I am responsible, how I am a goal-driven person with a desire to help the people around me and who has a friendly demeanor. I hope they would also say that I am kind, adaptable, motivated, and eager to learn. It has been some time since I have seen some of my references, so I would like to update them on what I have accomplished since our last interactions. For one, I have taken on a writing minor. My advisor would be particularly happy, but not surprised to hear that as he knows I am very dedicated to creative writing. I also would tell those who don’t know that I am a member of the Red Cross Club, EMS club, and that I have been volunteering as an EMT on campus as well at blood drives. Another thing I would like for them to know is that my studies here at UNE’s Nursing program are going more than satisfactorily, that I finished my first semester on the Dean’s list, and in being at college, my thirst for knowledge and my aspirations/goals are only growing.

  5. One person I would consider for my recommendations would be Stacy Stubinski, my manager at the Biddeford CVS where I spend a lot of time working. I think she would speak on my hard-work ethic, as I have managed being both a full-time student and working up to 30 hours a week at her store. I think she would also speak to my friendly persona, communication skills, and ability to follow and act on directions. Another would be Samantha Fox, the pharmacy manager at the CVS in my hometown. I would choose her because I have worked tons of hours in the pharmacy with her, despite being a front-store worker, because they needed the help. I quickly learned “the ways” of the pharmacy, learned how to return medicine to stock, speak to customers about their insurance, etc. I think she would also say I am a hard, flexible, worker, and a quick learner. For my third recommendation I would consider Professor Ryan Brod, or Jesse Miller, as I think both could speak to my writing capabilities and engagement in the classroom.
Some things that not all of these recommendations might know is I have been on the Dean’s list each semester since starting at UNE, have won 2 essay competitions and was the 2nd place finalist for the 2022 UNE Alumni Council essay contest. I have also had a job since I was 14, and put effort into everything I do, in and out of the classroom.

  6. The people I chose were from various jobs that I had from different backgrounds. One from the restaurant business, one from sales, and the other from when I was a camp counselor. I think the people that I chose would give a fair rating in terms of referring to me as a reliable person. My boss, a family friend when I worked at the restaurant, would say I am a hard worker and very reliable. I think this person would be glad to know that I declared a minor in communications and that I am pushing myself to evolve my educational knowledge. Then my boss from when I worked at Converse would say that I am very hard working and will be willing to do anything as well as be enthusiastic with others including customers. I would want them to know that I am taking everyone moment seriously and trying to make the best of every situation because life is short. My other boss was from when I worked at the summer camp down in Cape Cod. I think they would say that I am good with kids and am also good with communication and leadership skills to keep the kids entertained. I would like them to know that I still love educating others and will continue to be pro-planet friendly. As well as benign the Easter Bunny for a few years.

  7. If I were writing references, I would have selected Hayley Bilbrey, my supervisor at my UNE job, Diane Hayes at my Framingham Public Works job, and Richard Ames, my supervisor at my Natick Public Works job. These are all past supervisors at places where I was employed and would provide more of an overview of my strengths and experiences at my past jobs, versus references that speak just to my character or my hobbies and activities outside my jobs. I have had a good relationship with each of them so I wouldn’t have to worry about surprises coming up in the references that I wasn’t expecting. While Diane might be uninformed about some of my recent accomplishments regarding volunteering and community service, Hayley and Richard could speak to that. All of these jobs have required a mix of customer service and administrative tasks, which would be able to fit into what skills the job posting has talked about. Thus, these would be proven to the employer not just through my own words in my cover letter and resume, but backed up by outside sources, thus giving me more credibility. Both of my jobs at DPW required me to learn new skills and programs, and thus, that would help to show that any lack of experience I currently have will be easily remedied when I get the job.

  8. The three people I would consider to be a reference for me would be Meaghan Awugah, my manager in the housing office, another would be Professor Tom Klak whom I have worked and had a class with, and Katherine Watts, my boss at Regal Cinemas where I have worked during summer and winter breaks since the summer leading into my junior year of high school. I think all of these people would be able to speak to my great work ethic and reliability. I believe that these people would be able to speak highly of me and detail how I am passionate and driven to do any job to the best of my ability, as well as having the willingness to learn and be taught.
Some things that these people might not know about me, specifically my two managers at the housing office and the cinema, would be my success in academics. This includes being on the dean’s list each semester I have been at UNE, as well as maintaining a high GPA. I would also hope to inform my references about some of my extracurricular activities and other work including being a council member for the club tennis team and my experience as an orientation leader.

  9. The three people I chose to be a reference are three people that I consider to be very close and important people. Two of these people are from my summer camp that I grew up at and I was a counselor at. I consider these people really close to me because my dad is the director of this summer camp so I see them outside of camp a lot. The third person I chose is actually my best friends father. He is a very well known professor in Vermont and is a well known and respected member of the community. I believe these people would all agree on the same things about me. If they had three words to describe me, those words would be, hard working/driven, trustworthy, and reliable. Something that they might not know about me is that I chose them because each one of them has taught me some important rules and morals in life that I follow everyday. Another thing that they might not believe but I know will be super proud of is that I made Dean’s list last semester. These people know that I was never the brightest student in high school but I always worked hard and it finally paid off.

  10. Three people I have asked to be referenced for me are Melissa Post, my manager at Collinsville Canoe; Elora White, my old assistant manager at Lululemon; and Phil Bailey, my internship advisor at Apex Youth Connection. I think all three of these people would say that I am a very efficient and organized employee/intern. I also believe they would be able to speak to my reliability and communication skills. Melissa and Elora are very aware of my educational background and could speak to my success in the classroom and workplace and my ability to balance multiple commitments at once. Phil would be able to speak to my adaptability in a new role and successfully completing tasks in a short 4mo internship. I would like all three of these people to know more about the coursework I have completed, including case studies and advertising campaigns, as that could be relevant to any recruiter as I am studying business with a concentration in marketing. All three of these companies used different point-of-sale systems, software and procedures, all of which I picked up fairly quickly. They would be able to talk to my willingness to learn and stay engaged with the position because of this.

  11. The first person I would use as a reference would be Professor Brod from this school. I had one class with him and he has always been supportive towards any decision I make, as I’m sure a lot of his students would think about him. He also is a big english writing guy so if I was applying for a job within that category he would be a good person to have on my side. The next person I would probably ask to be my reference would be the mom of the kids I babysit. I’ve babysat them on and off now for like 7ish years and I think she would (hopefully) have good things to say about me. She could tell employers how I’m responsible and reliable since I have been around her family for so long. The last person I would ask to use as a reference would be my manager from this dinky little pizza place I worked at. He was kind of a unique guy but he knows a lot of people in the food industry so if I ever wanted a waitressing job, which I do in the future, he could probably help me out with that. He always liked me as a worker so I think he would also be able to say a few nice things about me.

  12. My potential 3 references that I would chose are Wendy Reeves, Ryan Brod, and Greg Zogg. Wendy is my current employer at the restaurant that I work at in the summer, Brod is a professor here, and Zogg is another professor here that I am going to study in Costa Rica with. Each one of these individuals I have a great relationship with, and they have seen me in a professional setting. I believe they would have a good perspective on my work ethic as well as knowing me as a person. I would ask each of them in person if I was able to, and if not I would send them an email. I would update each person on the things I have been up to and ask them if they would be willing to be a reference for me. I would let them know well in advance, so it does not catch them off guard.
